American Moderns, 1910–1960: From Georgia O'Keeffe to Norman Rockwell presents 57 artworks from the collection of the Brooklyn Museum in an exploration of the myriad ways in which American artists engaged with modernity.

Ranging widely in subject matter and style, the 53 paintings and four sculptures were produced by leading artists of the period, including Georgia O'Keeffe, Milton Avery, Marsden Hartley, Stuart Davis, Arthur Dove, Rockwell Kent, Joseph Stella, Elie Nadelman, and Norman Rockwell.

Significant works by these and other artists in the exhibition exemplify their unique contributions to modern culture.

Between 1910 and 1960, both American society and art underwent tumultuous and far-reaching transformations. The United States emerged as an international power of economic, industrial, and military might, while also experiencing two world wars and the Great Depression. New technologies fundamentally changed the pace and nature of all aspects of modern life. America’s increasingly diverse and mobile population challenged old social patterns and clamored for the equality and opportunities promised by the American dream. Art witnessed similarly dramatic changes as many artists rejected or reformulated artistic traditions, seeking new ways to make their work relevant in a contemporary context.

In 2013, Oxford Dictionaries named selfie the Word of the Year.

The use of the word increased 17,000% from January to December 2013. It was not only the use of the word that saw a dramatic jump, selfie images took over our computer and cell phone screens. Estimates suggest that over 18 million selfies are uploaded every week.

It seems like everyone who is anyone has posted a selfie somewhere on the internet: Pope Francis, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, and political leaders--including British Prime Minister David Cameron and U.S. President Barack Obama.

While the culture of social media created the word, selfie, this type of imagery is not new. It is simply the most recent version of a much older artistic standard—the self-portrait. This form of expression, which can be traced back to ancient Greece, has quietly persisted throughout the history of art, only to emerge in our time as the most common type of digital image.

Why is the self-portrait so important to us today? This fall, WAM invites visitors to explore the relevance of this digital trend and its long artistic history with 20 self-portraits from the permanent collection probing the different forms of the selfie. Museum-goers will then be asked to take and contribute their own self-portrait--now popularly known as a selfie--at a user-friendly station in the Living Room. All the smiles and poses will be uploaded and displayed in digital frames in River Lobby.

On November 17th, 1989, John McDonald loaded a keg of Boulevard Pale Ale into the back of his pickup and drove to a restaurant a few blocks down the street. Scarcely 24 hours later and 650 miles away, Doug Odell loaded a keg of Odell Golden Ale into the back of his pickup and... you get the idea. They were the first kegs of beer either of them ever sold, but they wouldn't be the last. This deep amber ale celebrates 25 years of brewing with an ample body of caramel-toffee malt balanced by piney hop notes. Here's a toast to working hard and sticking with it.

Notes/Commercial Description:
John Barleycorn is memorialized in English folk tradition as the personification of the barley plant, sacrificed at harvest time and then reborn as beer or ale. Our Harvest Dance Wheat Wine is a celebration of John’s Midwestern cousin, wheat. Beginning with a large portion of wheat malt, we add an equally generous helping of Hallertau and Citra hops and age the ale on both French and American oak. The result is a big, warming burst of tropical fruit flavors, highlighted by subtle wine-like notes, and rounding slowly to a long, dry, oaky finish.

You have in your hands a devastatingly fresh double IPA. While freshness is a key component of many beers – especially big, citrusy, floral IPAs – we’ve taken it further, a lot further, in this IPA. You see, we specifically brewed it NOT to last. We’ve not only gone to extensive lengths to ensure that you’re getting this beer in your hands within an extraordinarily short window, we made sure that the Enjoy By date isn’t randomly etched in tiny text somewhere on the label, to be overlooked by all but the most attentive of retailers and consumers. Instead, we’ve sent a clear message with the name of the beer itself that there is no better time than right now to enjoy this IPA.

When modern photographer Alfred Stieglitz characterized his work, he once wrote: "What is important to me is to hold the moment... to put down something so completely that when you look at what you've put down, you will relive the original experience."

This point captures the driving mission for so many modern artists. Beginning in the late 19th century, artists turned away from the dominating art academies and traditions they considered rigid and stale.

Rather than continue with subjects and styles centuries old, progressive artist yearned to reflect their own time and to better express their experience. New forms of artistic expression--impressionism, cubism, futurism, as examples--went hand in hand with the moderns' pioneering vision for new art to reflect a new time.

The Wichita Art Museum holds a distinguished collection of American modernism. In conjunction with the touring exhibition of treasured gems of American modern art from the Brooklyn Museum, a selection of WAM's prized works on paper from this important moment in art history will be on view through the fall. The exhibition features glowing examples by Arthur Dove, Stuart Davis, Charles Demuth, John Marin, Maurice Prendergast, Alfred Stieglitz, and many others.

In turning away from confining artistic protocols and regulations, artists pressed for freedom of expression and innovation. As the American art critic Charles Caffin bemoaned in 1900, "a great deal of American painting is characterized by irreproachable table manners rather than salient expression, by a desire to be amiable rather than convincing." Moderns were renegades who championed self-expression, ignored the rules, and crafted their own, freshly original art. What appeared as radical at the time is now revered for boldness of vision and the depth of expression. This fall, the Wichita Art Museum galleries will sing with exquisite American drawings, watercolors, and prints from this dynamic moment of change in 1890 to 1950.

All museum exhibitions receive generous sponsorship from the Friends of the Wichita Art Museum Endowment Fund and the City of Wichita.

When modern photographer Alfred Stieglitz characterized his work, he once wrote: "What is important to me is to hold the moment...to put down something so completely that when you look at what you've put down, you will relive the original experience." This point captures the driving mission for so many modern artists. Beginning in the late 19th century, artists turned away from the dominating art academies and traditions they considered rigid and stale. Rather than continue with subjects and styles centuries old, progressive artists yearned to reflect their own time and to better express their experience. New forms of artistic expression - impressionism, cubism, futurisum, as examples - went hand in hand with the moderns' pioneering vision for new art to reflect a new time.

This fall, the Wichita Art Museum galleries will sing with exquisite American drawings, watercolors, and prints from this dynamic moment of change in 1890 to 1950.

A draft consists of eight or more players selecting cards one at a time from their three new booster packs. When you sit down to draft, you open one booster pack, pick one card from it to keep, and pass the rest to your neighbor on the left. Each other player does the same, so you end up with the same number of cards as you would have had you just opened the packs. Once all the cards are picked from the first pack, everyone opens a second pack, picks one card, and passes to the right. The third pack is then passed to the left again. When all cards have been chosen, players build forty-card decks and are randomly paired up to play.

$10 Entry Fee, Prize Pool: 1 Pack Per Entrant, We Will Buy Packs Back at $3 Store Credit per Pack

Logan Mize is a Country music artist/songwriter from Clearwater, Kansas. In April of 2009, Logan signed a publishing/record deal with Big Yellow Dog Music and a booking deal with William Morris Endeavor followed in August of 2010. In 2012, Logan’s second album, Nobody in Nashville (released on Big Yellow Dog Music),
charted to No. 49 on Billboard Country Albums and No. 15 on Billboard Heatseekers Albums. Mize has opened for multiple headlining acts including Lady Antebellum, The Band Perry, Eric Church, Dierks Bentley, Charlie Daniels Band, Blake Shelton (on the Blake Shelton Country Cruise), Stoney LaRue, Hank Williams and a special tribute with Merle Haggard. Logan has also experienced success as a songwriter, notably when country music singer Bucky Covington recorded his song “Mexicoma” on his album Good Guys, which charted to No. 30 on Billboard Country Albums and No.43 on Billboard Independent Albums.

Logan Mize weaves yarn with equal measures elegance (“Sunflowers”) and energy (“I Remember Everything”). Evidence: The Music City resident’s buoyant Nobody in Nashville. Mize’s fiery new collection backs earthy (“Good Life”) and ethereal narratives (“The State of Your Heart”) and with richly detailed storytelling (“Hey Carolina”). At peaks, the 26-year-old balances heartache (“High-N-Dry”) and hope (“Rock and Roll Band”) with insightful wisdom gained through personal experience. “I got married about a year and a half ago,” Mize says. “So, pre-marriage heartbreak songs and post-marriage happy songs are mixed together. I wanted them to have a timeless feel.”

The rapidly rising songwriter undoubtedly has succeeded. Nobody in Nashville fuels both punchy country (“I Give In”) and raw rock and roll (“Ball and Chain”) with an intangible everyman appeal. “Logan has that great gift of authenticity,” says Daniel Tashian, who co-wrote four songs and co-produced the new album (due March 13). “Like those poets of the heartland that came before him – Dylan, Petty, Mellencamp – his images are real and hard-won. He's not making up words; these are the pictures of his life.” One legend particularly helps the Kansas native craft his singular story.

“Tom Petty’s my favorite songwriter both melodically and lyrically,” Mize admits. “There’s a lot of times I’m listening to Echo or the Wildflowers record and go, ‘I want something that sounds like that.’ So, I pull from places like that, but I definitely don’t want to try to think about anybody else when I’m writing. I want to pull straight from my own head. I keep it my own for sure.” His mission statement emerges in the seamless title track. “I’m just three chords and twelve hundred miles,” he sings defiantly as mushrooming drums and spiky guitars punctuate his point, “from telling the whole world the honest truth.”

Mize’s lofty aim pays high dividends: The singer-songwriter has shared stages with boldfaced names like Lady Antebellum, Eric Church, The Band Perry, Billy Currington, Pat Green, Stoney LaRue and the Charlie Daniels Band. In fact, his high-octane live show, infectious melodies and distinctive vocals have turned heads throughout Nashville and beyond. “You know it’s Logan on a song,” says celebrated songwriter Liz Rose (Taylor Swift’s Grammy-winning “White Horse”), who co-wrote “I Remember Everything” with Mize and Tashian. “Nobody sounds like him, so real and so much grit!” Bucky Covington was so taken by Mize’s song “Mexicoma” that he recorded it on his album Live from Rockingham and frequently anchors shows around the boozy border travelogue.

Mize takes such achievements in even stride. He’s far more concerned about more artistically fulfilling goals. “Oh, sure, it’d be great to get a Tim McGraw cut,” says the staff writer for Nashville powerhouse Big Yellow Dog. “But I just want to write good songs and I hope people like them. I like to paint a picture that’s easy to look at and is just something that feels good and has vivid imagery.” Stellar song craft runs deep in his blood: Logan counts Billy Mize, longtime Merle Haggard steel guitarist and pioneer of the Bakersfield sound, as kin. The connection once landed him onstage before The Hag himself. “They called me to come out and play a couple songs at my uncle Billy’s 80th birthday party at Buck Owens Crystal Palace in Bakersfield,” Logan Mize recalls. “I was getting ready to go up and play and there was this interview playing with Haggard talking about Billy Mize’s songwriting. He said that his favorite Billy Mize song was called ‘Who Will Buy the Wine’ and that’s the song I had to play. It was a once in a lifetime experience. Afterward, Haggard gave me the nod like, ‘You don’t suck that bad.’”
